How To Get A Better Pastor

by Diana Davis, wife of Indiana Baptists' State Executive Director

Could your pastor use some improvement? Well, here's good news and bad news. Diana Davis

The bad news: Even Billy Graham or the Apostle Paul could not be a perfect pastor!

Good news: You can do something significant to assure that your church gets a better pastor.

Carefully follow this 3-step plan and you will see amazing results. Guaranteed.

Step 1. Pray. Right now. Put down this paper, get on your knees before your holy God, close your eyes and pray for your pastor for five consecutive minutes. Don't tell God your pastor's faults. God knows his shortcomings, and yours. Don't pray about him; pray for him.

Step 2. On day two of your "improved pastor" program, set a timer and pray for your pastor for ten consecutive minutes. Ask God to make him a better pastor, to give him joy, wisdom, and courage. Pray for Sunday's sermon, his schedule, his family, his health. After you've prayed for the full ten minutes, write a note to compliment one thing he's doing well.

Step 3. On day three, carefully read Hebrews 13:17, then pray. Ask God if He would have you pray for your pastor at a specific time regularly. For example, will you pray for him each Monday at 8 a.m.? If God convicts you to pray for your pastor at a regular time, call or write to let him know. Then do it devotedly.

God-sized results. That's what you'll see when you pray.

After being married to a pastor for decades, I can absolutely assure you it's the most rewarding responsibility in the world, but it also has tremendous challenges. No position in the church is more difficult, never-ending or emotionally draining. The Devil keeps your pastor under continuous surveillance and attack! That is why just one praying church member can truly make a difference. A good church can make a great pastor. Commit today to pray for him, and you will get a better pastor. Guaranteed.

Your written guarantee:
"Whatever you ask in My name, I will do it so that the Father may be glorified in the Son." John 14:13 HCSB.
